History of Saint-Geniès

"Qui bien lauze, pour cent ans pose"

Saint-Geniès, halfway between Sarlat and
Montignac-Lascaux
is a typical perigordian
village, its houses roofed with lauzes
(local flat stones used as tiles).
The name Saint-Geniès comes from Saint-Genès,
a martyr of Arles, who lived in the
3rd and 4th century.Its roman church,
notre dame-de-l'assomption, was built in the
12th century and its part of the national
heritage since 1943. Its castle, the grouping
of the houses of two 12th century knights,
embodies with the church, the best cluster of
"lauzes" roofs. The gothic-styled chapel of the
Cheylard
was founded in 1327 by Gaubert de
Chaminade, its overlooks the little valley of
the Chironde and offers beautiful frescœs of
that period to its visitors. Only a few steps
away, one can spot the vestiges of Sant-Geniès
first castle's dungeon, a castle that disappeared
most likely at the end of the religious wars.

Saint-Geniès is a deligthful village where the
present beats in the bosom of the past.
It's a wonderful place to live and a
pleasant one to halt and to come back again.
What makes this hamlet so charming is that
it manages to reconcilie the remnants of
yesterday and the necessities of today's life.

a post office, a bakery, a café-tobacconist,

number of craftsmen. Opportunities of
